Immersion Week 2: Day 5 in DC

Following a morning off, the KU Leuven and AU students made a visit to the Library of Congress. Besides getting out of the clouds and rain, the Library provided a walkthrough of  Thomas Jefferson's book collection, an exhibit on the Americas before colonization, and a glimpse at some of America's most famous and well-known photographs. And of course, the chance to see the beauty of the building itself. Definitely a place to take as many photos as your phone can handle.

After visiting the LOC, the group walked a bit further down Independence Ave to the Dirksen Senate Office Building for a meeting with several Senate Foreign Relations Committee staffers. The meeting allowed for an opportunity to learn about the inner workings of the US Senate, like who is really spending all those late nights drafting legislation and public speeches, and what it takes to maintain a work-life balance while working for one of the busiest Senate committees. The staffers also spoke about how they found themselves working at the Senate, and how important skills like language, writing, and focus under pressure can be a real asset to any prospective employee.

An exciting moment to remember, the US Senate officially confirmed the nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court, making her the first black woman to hold such a position. The group happened to walk by the Supreme Court just moments after the vote was finalized, and decided to mark the occasion with a photo.
