Class Recap: Mar 21 2022

Today's theme was Transatlantic Relations and Trade. To kick things off, the class continued last week's discussion of outcomes and potential impacts should one of three scenarios play out in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict; a rapid Russian victory, a long protracted conflict, or a rapid Russian defeat. After about half an hour of insightful and even optimistic discussion, it was time for two more Transatlantic Policy Memorandum presentations. One group wrote on the challenges of trade and oversight of "Big Tech companies in their memo, "Transatlantic Relations:  "Facing the Big Tech Giants." As their presentation was pre-recorded and viewed by the class prior to the start of the class, only one group gave a live presentation to the hybrid classroom. In their memo entitled, "Brexit in Northern Ireland and its Impact on Transatlantic Trade," the group discussed the peace and stability of Northern Ireland, created by the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, and now being put at risk because of the mounting tensions and complications surrounding the Northern Ireland protocol. After one live presentation and brief Q&A, the remainder of class was spent enjoying a guest lecture from AU professor, co-Director of the AU Transatlantic Policy Center, Council on Foreign Relations Fellow, and expert on comparative politics, political economy, and trade, Dr. Michelle Egan. Following an informative lecture, Dr. Egan took a myriad of questions from the class, giving her insights on the current EU cooperation in enacting sanctions against Russia, and on what the future of EU-UK-US trade relations may look like.

Another engaging, informative, and insightful discussion on one of the many key facets that make up the transatlantic order.
