Immersion Week 2: Day 2 in DC

Monday morning, the students gathered at the Center for European Policy Analysis to hear from and speak with James Lamond, CEPA Director of Democratic Resilience Program, Sarah Jane Rzegocki,  DRP program assistant, Gabriel Delvoi, program assistant for Digital Innovation Initiative, and Amelia Martin, CEPA's program assistant for External Affairs. The discussion was open, covering everything from CEPA's work on the current Ukraine-Russia conflict, their coverage of emerging technologies and data privacy laws, and recommendations on how best to enter the world of working at a DC-based think tank.

After a pleasant lunch break spent sitting on the lawns of the National Mall, those who were so inclined took the very exciting elevator ride up inside the Washington Monument! The views from the observation deck could not have been better, with clear skies and an endless supply of sunshine to provide the perfect lighting. Not too bad for a Monday.

To cap off a day packed with activities, the students and professors gathered at AU's School International Service for a special panel discussion, "Transatlantic Ambassadors: Diplomacy in a Troubles Age," led by SIS professor Ambassador Sally Shelton-Colby, who was joined by Jan De Pauw, Deputy Chief of Mission at Belgian Embassy in DC, Piper Campbell, retired diplomat and former US Ambassador to Mongolia, and Pablo Garcia-Berdoy, former Spanish diplomat and Ambassador Permanent Representative to the EU. These diplomatic experts tackled issues of both a transatlantic and global nature, taking tough questions from the audience as well as from each other, all making for an insightful and engaging discussion. The week was off to a very good start.
