Immersion Week 1: Day 6 in Brussels

Another early(ish) morning on Thursday took the AU students and several KU Leuven students took another train to Brussels, this time for a briefing at the European External Action Service, the EU's diplomatic service, implementing its Common Foreign and Security Policy around the world. The students got to hear from three distinguished members of the EEAS staff.  Discussing the framework and role of the EEAS was Christian Manahl, Senior Policy Advisor for Policy Planning and Strategic Foresight. Native Romanian Tania Latici, a Policy Officer in the Security and Defence Division, briefed the group on the EU's Security and Defence initiatives and mechanisms. To conclude the event, Eva Tvarozkova, Team Leader for and COTRA Alternative Chair for the United States & Canada Division, spoke on the current state of EU-US relations, both in general and in the specific realm of security.  Yet another engaging and informative series of speakers, courtesy of the European Union.

With the conclusion of the day's scheduled itinerary, the students broke off into smaller groups to take the train back to Leuven, or find lunch in Brussels and spend the afternoon, and most of the evening, in the city.
